Pigeon feeding
Please don't feed the pigeons in the town.
We're proud of our Parade and Pond so help us keep the area clean.
An urban pest
Pigeons thrive in towns because of the availability of food and the absence of predators.
- They can spread diseases and are a source of allergens, which can cause respiratory ailments and allergic skin reactions.
- There is potential for these illnesses to spread to people through contact with pigeon droppings and dandruff, feathers, and parasites.
- Nests and pigeon carcasses can become infested with mites and insects which can contaminate food and transmit diseases.
- Pigeon infestations can spread into buildings causing nuisance and damage.
- Feeding pigeons attracts mice and rats which take any uneaten food.
What attracts pigeons?
Food spillage and litter containing food waste is common in urban areas. This source of food has been exploited by pigeon populations.

Feeding pigeons
Feeding is one of the main reasons why flocks congregate around shopping centres. Some people feed pigeons in the mistaken belief that the activities of the birds are harmless to humans. However:
- Excessive feeding can lead to all year round breeding, resulting in overcrowding.
- Overcrowding increases stress in the pigeons which increases the potential for disease and parasites to spread quickly within the flock.
- Feeding pigeons in an urban area is potentially hazardous to them, resulting in damage to wings and feet.
- The presence of large numbers of pigeons can make the town unappealing for some members of the public.
Still want to feed the birds?
You can feed them in the park where there is more space and fewer shoppers - location map. Many thanks for not feeding the pigeons in the town.
