About the strategy
The transport sector produces more greenhouse gases than any other in the UK. In our stand against climate change, Watford Council are making changes to how we travel to, from and around Watford.
Our transforming travel strategy sets out how we plan to make it easier and greener for people to get around, particularly by walking, cycling and using public transport, following your feedback from our previous consultation (PDF - 1.18MB).
Strategy proposals
We have developed a series of actions to make transport more sustainable over the next 10 to 15 years, to achieve our goal of making Watford healthier, more sustainable and more attractive.
- Active travel - Our focus is on providing the necessary improvements that make the streets of Watford attractive and safe places for people of all ages to walk and cycle.
- Longer journeys - It is essential that travelling around Watford is easy and efficient. We aim to improve the alternatives to driving into and out of the town.
- Car ownership alternatives - We understand that not all trips can be made by walking, cycling or public transport, so we will aim to help provide more options.
- Town Centre - Many of our shops and businesses are in the town centre so we want to make it easier to travel to, from and around.
- Supporting change - To make all these new options the best they can be, it is vital the community helps decide how they will work.
- Moving goods - As well as moving people, our transport network must move goods. We aim to increase the efficiency of such movements and limit their negative impact on our community.
Walking and Cycling schemes
Local cycling and walking infrastructure plans are a new approach to identifying cycling and walking improvements required at a local level. Five key cycle routes and seven core walking routes have been identified as the ones most likely to attract more people to walk and cycle in Watford.
