The Rediscovering the River Colne and Tales of the River projects, in partnership with Watford Council and Groundwork East, are inviting residents to take part in a series of activities aimed at restoring Watford’s beautiful river system and celebrating its important heritage.
The Tales of the River programme includes River Ambles – Foraging with Kev - a guided walk along the riverbank on Wednesday 3 May, from 10:30am – 12:30pm. Participants will learn about wild edibles and foraging skills from an expert guide. Participants will be shown how to prepare and use foraged foods, coming away with some useful recipes. They will also learn about their folklore, natural history and other uses.
There are also various opportunities to get involved with our Rediscovering the River Colne project:
Water Chemistry drop in sessions (Friday 3 May, 11:45am and 2pm, Radlett Road Playing Fields and The Lairage Land) During this day, Community Connections CIC will be taking our second set of 2023 water samples and assist with collection of water samples and river measurements.
Invasive Species Day (Friday 19 May, 10:30am – 12:30pm, Munden Estate, Colne Way entrance) - help with the important work of removing Himalayan Balsam, an invasive species that causes erosion of the riverbanks. You will also learn about seasonal wildflowers and how to help with monitoring the river.
Invasive Species Walk and ID (Friday 26 May, 10:30am – 12:30pm, Waterfields Recreational Ground) - you will learn how to spot invasive species, such as Japanese knotweed, and how you can help restore the River Colne.
Paul Stacey, Associate Director of Environment for Watford Borough Council, said: "By participating in these events, attendees will be playing their part in protecting the environment and preserving the beauty of our River Colne. They will also learn about the important history of the river and its role in shaping Watford’s heritage and future."
