Over the next few months, the council will be installing 79 new electric vehicle (EV) charging points across the town in a significant move towards more sustainable transport in the area...
This development comes at a time when the need for reducing carbon emissions is paramount, and the town has already made notable strides in the adoption of green technology. According to recent data from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Watford ranks in the top 5 UK towns with the greenest transport.
The installation of the 79 new EV charging points - bringing the total number to 102 (dual) in Watford – will be spread throughout the town, and significantly improve the accessibility and convenience of EV charging for both residents and visitors alike. This move will also encourage the uptake of EVs and further promote the town's efforts towards a cleaner environment.

*Some locations have twin chargers bringing the number to 79 EV charging points. The council will also be consulting residents to make legal Traffic Regulation Orders on the EV bays, so that they can be enforced and remain available for use by EV vehicles only. |
The project has been spearheaded by Watford Borough Council and supported by the government's Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV). The funding for Watford comes via 60% from OZEV and the other 40% of the install costs through the council’s contract with partners Blink Charging. The total investment is £1.3 million.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: "We are delighted that we will be installing 79 new EV charging points across the town. This is a significant step towards our goal of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transport. It is really important that we have the charging infrastructure in place so that people can switch to EV vehicles.
“Watford's commitment to green transport has already resulted in significant achievements, including being ranked in the top 5 UK towns. This achievement is a testament to the town's commitment to a cleaner environment and underscores the importance of investing in sustainable transport infrastructure for a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
Cllr Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Sustainability, said: "We are delighted to have obtained this funding that will enable us to extend our EV charging infrastructure, facilitating the utilisation of electric vehicles. As a council, we are dedicated to decreasing carbon emissions in the borough by implementing various initiatives.
“A significant number of individuals in Watford already use electric vehicles, which are proven to decrease pollution and enhance local air quality. Thus, it is crucial to have an adequate charging infrastructure in place, and I would like to express my gratitude to the hardworking team that obtained this grant funding"
As the world continues to tackle climate change, initiatives like electric vehicle charging points will play an increasingly important role in building sustainable communities.
