Now in its third year, the 'Watford Community Golf Cup' - the ever-popular fundraiser for the town’s charities - took place at West Herts Golf Club this week (10 July), and it resulted in a remarkable fundraising achievement of £11,195.
The Golf Day, organised by Former Players Club and Everyone Active, in association with Watford Borough Council, was created by Luther Blissett OBE DL and Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor with the aim of providing an inclusive competition that would appeal to a diverse range of participants, all while prioritising the local community at the heart of the event.
Co-host of the event, Luther Blissett OBE DL, said: “The idea behind our golf day is to create a fun and joyful gathering while also providing support to our extended 'Watford family,' reflecting the values instilled in us as players by Graham Taylor OBE about giving back."
A total of over 70 participants, including corporate teams and individuals took part in this community spirited fun event to compete for the coveted trophy. The players came together at the prestigious West Herts Golf Club, which is known for the challenge of its true, firm and fast greens.
Teams were joined by legends from Watford Football Club and other sporting heroes, including boxer John Conteh and Former Players Club members Alec Chamberlain, John McClelland and the two original “Rocket Men” Luther Blissett and Ian Bolton. The Mayor provided support via a buggy to the teams throughout the event.
The primary objective of the event was to support the Watford Community Fund, a vital resource dedicated to assisting over 100 local charities in town via fundraising and grants. Since 2020, Luther and the Mayor have held various events such as quizzes to help raise over £250,000 for the fund.
The success of this year's 'Watford Community Cup Golf Day 2023' would not have been possible without the generous contributions from official sponsors Murrill Construction Ltd, Imagine Property Group, and Veolia. Moreover, numerous local businesses demonstrated their support by donating funds and gifts.
