As we mark Menopause Awareness Month, Watford Council is proud to announce, along with partners Menopause Support, the launch of a free booklet that provides advice and information.
Whilst the menopause affects every woman at some point in their life, there is a still a lot of misunderstanding and confusion about what to expect, how to manage the physical and mental changes, and where to look for the right support.
‘Understanding Menopause’, a free booklet, has been reviewed by expert clinicians and is a handy guide about how to keep healthy and happy before and during the menopause. Now, thanks to a memorial fundraising campaign led by Martin Weatherilt and family following the tragic death of Martin’s wife Annette, and with the help of the council, 32,000 copies of the booklet are available to women in Watford.

Watford Council are currently the only local authority working with Menopause Support to ensure that these materials are available, distributing them via all community networks and schools, in GP surgeries, community centres, Watford Women’s Centre and Watford Football Club to all female season ticket holders. Residents can also collect their free physical copy of the booklet from the Customer Service Centre.
Diane Danzebrink, founder of Menopause Support said: “We are proud to publish this much needed guidance booklet. Women experiencing perimenopause and menopause should not have to suffer in silence. We urge women across the UK to read the guidance and speak to your GP armed with the completed symptom checker. There are lots of treatment and support options available to you.”
Cllr Jennifer Pattinson, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Wellbeing, said: “Following on from the successful event ‘Menopause Matters’ at Watford Football Club, we are proud to announce this partnership and ensure everyone in Watford is aware of this valuable resource.
As a 48-year-old woman currently experiencing perimenopause, I was concerned about how to access the right information I needed locally to understand how I was feeling and what may come next. I felt under-prepared. I know there are thousands of women in our town feeling just like me.
Having met Martin and listened to his family’s story I felt, as a council, we needed to act to support women in our town. I am grateful to have met both Martin and Diane and to be able to work with them and the council to ensure every woman in Watford is able to access this information via this booklet, which we will be distributing widely over the coming weeks.”
