A reminder to residents about staying safe around fireworks...
As Watford communities prepare to celebrate upcoming holidays and special occasions, Safer Watford, the Community Safety Partnership, is reminding residents about the importance of observing local fireworks laws and taking safety precautions when using fireworks in their gardens or any other private properties.
Every year, the use of fireworks in residential areas can lead to serious accidents, property damage, and fires. It is crucial for residents to remember that fireworks are not toys and can pose significant risks if mishandled or used irresponsibly.
Since 2021, Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Fire Service have reported 6 Primary fires which were due to the misuse of fireworks. ‘Primary fires’ are potentially more serious fires that harm people or cause damage to property.
In accordance with local ordinances, the use of fireworks is allowed between 7am – 11pm, extending to midnight on 5 November and on New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, they are allowed from 7am to 1am the following day.
Certain types of fireworks are prohibited altogether. All residents are urged to adhere to these regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for everyone. Key reminders for a safe and legal fireworks celebration:
- Know the local laws: Familiarise yourself with the local regulations regarding fireworks usage. Ignoring these laws may result in fines or legal consequences.
- Purchase fireworks from reputable retailers: Only buy fireworks from licensed retailers who sell approved CE marked safe products.
- Use fireworks outdoors: Set off fireworks in a clear, open area, away from buildings, vehicles, and flammable materials.
- Supervise children: Children should never handle fireworks. Keep them at a safe distance from fireworks displays and provide adult supervision at all times.
- Follow manufacturer instructions: Read and follow the instructions on the fireworks packaging carefully.
- Keep water nearby: Have a bucket of water, hose, or fire extinguisher on hand to quickly extinguish any fires or sparks.
- Never relight a dud firework: If a firework fails to ignite, wait at least 20 minutes before attempting to handle it. Then, soak it in water to ensure it is no longer a danger.
- Dispose of used fireworks safely: After the celebration, soak used fireworks in water and dispose of them in a non-combustible container.
- Be considerate of neighbours and pets: Loud fireworks can be distressing to pets and people with sensitivities. Inform neighbours of your plans and be mindful of the time you set off fireworks.
- Report illegal activity: If you witness illegal fireworks usage or unsafe practices, click here to report
