Their efforts were focused on addressing some fly tipping hotspots surrounding St Albans Road, including Victoria Road, Lowestoft Road, and Leavesden Road. The visit was also part of an awareness-raising campaign to remind residents of the need to focus on responsible waste disposal practices, including the importance of ensuring that waste is disposed of legally and ethically.
The key steps for residents to adhere to when disposing of waste, which follows the S.C.R.A.P code includes:
- Suspect all waste carriers: Refrain from allowing waste carriers to collect rubbish until their legitimacy is verified.
- Check registration details: Verify waste carriers' registration through the Environment Agency or by calling 03708 506 506.
- Refuse unsolicited offers: Decline offers from unverified waste collectors.
- Ask for disposal details: Inquire about the disposal process and request evidence of appropriate disposal methods.
- Paperwork should be obtained: Ensure proper documentation, such as invoices or waste transfer notes, are obtained for waste removal.
Fly tipping poses a significant financial burden, costing taxpayers £1 million annually in clean-up efforts across Hertfordshire. In Watford, since 2016, fly tippers have been identified and issued with Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN’s) for £300, totalling over £12,000 in fines. These individuals have been given 14 days to pay their fines.

This is not a victimless crime, and we continue to provide residents with the knowledge to identify and report illegal waste disposal, ensuring a cleaner, safer Watford for all."
