Watford Borough Council has announced Councillor Dawn Allen-Williamson as its new Chairwoman, with Councillor Favour Ezeifedi as Vice-Chairwoman, at the Annual Council meeting on Tuesday 21 May...
Councillor Dawn Allen-Williamson, who represents the Callowland ward in North Watford, has lived in the town for over 30 years and was elected as a councillor in 2019. This role has enabled her to participate in an array of volunteering opportunities, events, and council-related activities.
The new Chairwoman has chosen Ngorli C.I.C and Manna Foodbank as her chosen charities, and she will spend her year in office fundraising for them. Dawn has been deeply involved with these organisations for many years, dedicating a lot of time to volunteering, and her hard work has impacted many people's lives in meaningful ways.
Ngorli C.I.C focuses on enhancing the educational experiences of children by offering supplementary out-of-school tuition for youngsters from diverse backgrounds in the community. This includes initiatives like their Saturday School and Mentorship Programme. Manna Foodbank, run by the Elim Church on St Albans Road, provides essential food support to those in the community struggling due to the cost-of-living crisis.
In her new role, Councillor Dawn Allen-Williamson, of Jamaican British descent, has made history as the first black Chairwoman of the council. Joining her, Councillor Favour Ezeifedi, of Nigerian descent, will serve as Vice-Chairwoman. Their roles underscore the diverse representation within Watford Borough Council's elected councillors.
Chairwoman of the Council, Dawn Allen-Williamson, said: “I am honoured to serve as the Chairwoman of Watford Borough Council, and to be the first black woman to hold this position. As I take on this role, I am proud to represent the voices and aspirations of all residents, regardless of background.
“Through my volunteering and work with the community, I have witnessed firsthand the power of unity and compassion in bringing about positive change. I am therefore committed to using my platform to continue supporting organisations like Ngorli C.I.C, Manna Foodbank and so many more in Watford, whose invaluable work strengthens the fabric of our town.”
Vice- Chairwoman, Councillor Favour Ezeifedi said: “I am delighted to have been chosen to be Vice- Chairwoman of Watford Borough Council for the coming year. I look forward to undertaking the civic representation of the Borough during the next twelve months and visiting as many local community organisations as I can.”
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “It's fantastic that Dawn and Favour are stepping into these significant roles as the council's representatives. Their diverse backgrounds highlight the inclusive nature of the elected members at the council and town.
“They will become important representatives of our town and will visit the many and varied community organisations with which Watford is blessed.
“It’s the volunteers of these community organisations, supported in varying degrees by paid staff, who are at the heart of Watford. The commitment and dedication of these volunteers never ceases to amaze me. I am sure both Dawn and Favour will continue to show the volunteers our appreciation for everything they do for our community.”
Dawn will be carrying out fundraising events throughout the year and wants any local businesses or groups that could help with sponsorship, venue support and fundraising, to contact her at chairman@watford.gov.uk.
