Watford Borough Council is considering taking another step towards a more sustainable future.
The next Cabinet meeting (3 June) will see the Mayor and his cabinet voting on moving to fortnightly recycling collections for low rise properties and individual flats (in blocks up to 5) from October 2024. All other waste collections would remain the same.
If passed, this move would align the borough with 80% of councils nationwide, with the key benefits set out as:
- A greener approach: By reducing the number of collection vehicles on the road, the council and waste management partner Veolia would significantly decrease carbon emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment.
- Value for money: The shift would allow us to more efficiently use resources while maintaining efficient waste management.
To support residents in the transition if it is passed, it is proposed that those who need more space have the option to:
- Upgrade to a larger bin: those with a 140-litre bin could swap it for a standard 240-litre one.
- Second bin for larger households: Homes with four or more permanent residents could apply for a second 240-litre bin.
Fortnightly recycling collections will be considered at Cabinet on 3 June and the decision will be subject to a call-in period.
