Simpler Recycling

Watford's wheelie bins

Simpler Recycling seeks to improve recycling rates, reduce contamination and achieve net zero targets.

What is ‘Simpler Recycling’?

Simpler Recycling is a new government initiative to make recycling straightforward and consistent, enabling the recycling of the same materials whether you are at home, at work, or in school.

What does this mean for businesses, schools, hospitals and other non-domestic premises?

Under the Simpler Recycling legislation, businesses, schools, hospitals, and other non-domestic premises must:

  • Arrange collections: Partner with a licensed waste carrier to collect recyclable materials.
  • Recycle specific materials: Ensure the recycling of food waste, glass, metal, plastic, paper, and cardboard.

By adhering to these requirements, organisations can contribute to a more sustainable environment and demonstrate their commitment to corporate social responsibility.

When does this legislation come into force?

The timeline for compliance with the Simpler Recycling legislation is as follows:

  • Businesses and relevant non-domestic premises must comply by 31 March 2025.
  • Micro-firms (businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees) must comply by 31 March 2027.

By these dates, all specified premises must have arrangements in place to recycle the designated materials effectively.
