Get ready to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Watford’s history as Heritage Open Days returns from 6 - 15 September 2024....

This annual event celebrates our cultural heritage by opening the doors of some of the town’s most cherished landmarks and historical sites. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a curious visitor, there’s something for everyone to explore.

  • St Matthews Church, Oxhey (6 September, 11am – 7pm) Begin your Heritage Open Days journey with a visit to St Matthews Church, an iconic local landmark since its completion in 1880. Its imposing spire and commanding presence make it a must-see. No pre-booking is required, so drop by to appreciate the church’s historic charm.
  • A Tale of Two Histories – Pump House Theatre & Arts Centre (6 September, 3:30pm – 5pm & 7 September, 11am – 12:30pm) Discover the evolution of the Pump House Theatre & Arts Centre on a guided tour that explores its past as a pump station and its transformation into a vibrant cultural venue. Delve into the building’s rich history and current role in the arts.
  • Holy Rood Church Tour (7 & 13 September, 2pm) Experience a guided tour of Holy Rood Church, one of only two Grade 1 listed buildings in Watford. Built in 1890 in the Gothic Revival style by architect John Francis Bentle, this tour will highlight its stunning architecture and artwork. No pre-booking is necessary.
  • Hertfordshire Fire Museum (7 September, 12pm – 4pm) Explore the Hertfordshire Fire Museum to learn about the evolution of firefighting. View historical equipment and gain insight into the firefighting techniques of the past and present. No pre-booking is necessary.
  • Friends of Watford – Museum History Talk (11 September, 2pm to 4pm) Join the Friends of Watford Museum at Watford Town Hall for a special history talk. This event provides an engaging overview of Watford’s past, hosted by local experts. Pre-booking is required and can be done by contacting museum@watford.gov.uk or calling 01923 232297.
  • St Mary’s Church (14 September, 10am to 2pm) Visit one of Watford’s oldest churches, St Mary’s Church, situated in the heart of the town. This historic site has been central to the community’s heritage and is open for exploration without the need for pre-booking.
  • Watford – What’s Your Story? Creative Writing Workshop (14 September, 10am – 3pm) Unleash your creativity with a free writing workshop at Watford Central Library. Led by David Elliott, a member of Watford Writers, this workshop invites participants to capture their memories or create new stories set in Watford. Pre-booking is required via this link
