Watford Borough Council’s burial service has received the highest national accredited standard by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) – who aim to improve the experience of the bereaved.
The team based at North Watford Cemetery and Vicarage Road Cemetery, joins a small selection of other local authorities in the country to obtain this gold standard award. To be considered for the Charter, local authorities must achieve the basic targets and developments in helping families and friends arranging funerals for loved ones, including facilities offered and information available.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor said: “When somebody passes away it is always a difficult time for their family of loved ones. That’s why we provide good facilities and support, to ensure the burial goes as smoothly as possible.
“We work hard to make sure our parks, cemeteries and green spaces are maintained to the highest possible standards, which is why we have the highest number of Green Flags in Hertfordshire. It is so important that we offer residents in Watford a helpful and peaceful experience to remember their loved ones.”
In recent years, North Watford Cemetery has undergone significant improvements, including the restoration of its iron gates, a lodge extension, and landscaping, earning it national Green Flag status.
Additional enhancements were also made in 2022, including a new Centenary Memorial Garden with above-ground memorials for ashes, an ornamental tree with engraved leaves, improvements to the cemetery entrance, upgrades to the pond with added seating, resurfacing of the car park, and the creation of memorials for cremated remains of small pets.
