On Sunday 10 November, the Royal British Legion and other organisations will lay wreaths at Watford’s Peace Memorial outside the Town Hall (3pm)...
This is to commemorate the service and sacrifice of the town’s armed forces community from the two World Wars up to the present day.
Proceedings will begin with a short service at St Mary’s Church at 2pm, then a parade led by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire up to the Peace Memorial. If residents would like to join in at the end of parade, it will start by the church at 2.45pm or you can join the service at 3pm by the Peace Memorial.
There will be two minute’s silence and a reading by the Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor and Chairwomen of the Council, Councillor Dawn Allen-Williamson. The service will also be attended by the Vice Chairman and the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, with Watford residents invited to join in the ceremony and pay their respects.
Elected Mayor of Watford Peter Taylor said: “Remembrance Day is a time to honour the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of those from Watford and beyond who served in the armed forces and gave so much in conflicts past and present. Their bravery continues to inspire us, reminding us of our shared duty to strive for peace and unity. It’s a privilege to join with residents every year as we pay tribute to these remarkable individuals.”
Chairwomen of the Council, Dawn Allen-Williamson said: “In remembrance, we come together as a community to reflect on the sacrifices made by our armed forces and veterans across generations. This event is an important moment of unity, respect, and gratitude for the service of those who have defended our freedoms. I invite all residents to stand with us in honouring their memory and legacy.”
In another mark of respect to those who have fought in conflicts, silhouette figures of First World War soldiers or ‘Tommy’s’, will be across Watford as part of an art installation run by the charity Remembered. It aims to educate all generations about why so many made the ultimate sacrifice, and to raise funds to help heal those suffering from the hidden wounds of war.
