Watford Borough Council are running two drop-in sessions in Whippendell Wood this January to plant thousands of tree saplings!
Over 3,000 tree saplings provided through a carbon offsetting scheme will replant the areas where Ash dieback affected trees were felled in Whippendell Woods last year.
This is part of the wider Whippendell Wood ancient woodland restoration project, which aims to improve the structural and species diversity of the woodland to support more wildlife, improve access and create better links with Cassiobury Park and the wider landscape.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said “I am excited that we are once again offering residents the opportunity to actively contribute to planting even more trees across Watford.
Whippendell Wood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and it is vital that we continue to protect and preserve this valuable woodland for future generations. Thousands of tree saplings will be planted as part of our commitment towards a greener Watford, contributing to the borough’s goal of achieving carbon net-zero by 2030.
When I was elected, I set out in my manifesto to plant 20,000 trees by 2026 in our town. I am proud that Watford has already exceeded this target 2 years ahead of time.”
This community tree-planting initiative offers a fantastic opportunity to get active, support local wildlife, and contribute to preserving one of Watford’s most treasured ancient woodlands. Whether you plant one tree or several, your efforts will leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
No experience needed, full instructions and guidance will be provided on-site. All ages are welcome. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Drop-in sessions will take place from 10:30am to 2:30pm on Sunday 19 January and Saturday 25 January. The tree planting site is approximately a 15-minute walk from Grove Mill Lane car park, with the precise meeting point available via What3Words: odds.fine.rescue.
Participants are encouraged to bring sturdy boots, appropriate clothing, and gardening gloves or spades if possible, though a limited supply of tools and gloves will be provided. Please bring your own lunch and refreshments to enjoy during the day.
