Watford Borough Council is continuing its commitment to improving St Albans Road, a key destination in the town, with further enhancements planned for spring 2025...

The improvements will focus on the west carriageway footpath from Langley Road to Lowestoft Road. They are part of a larger effort to enhance Watford’s streetscapes, encourage safer travel, and support local businesses.

It will include resurfacing the footpaths with high-quality materials, repairing damaged infrastructure, planting greenery where possible, and improving cycle parking. Road markings will also be refreshed, damaged safety barriers replaced, and unnecessary signs removed to reduce clutter.

To ensure minimal disruption, the works will be carried out in stages. The first stage will cover Langley Road to the Railway Bridge, followed by the stretch between the Railway Bridge and Leavesden Road. The final stage will focus on the area between Leavesden Road and Lowestoft Road.

These upgrades build on previous successful improvements along St Albans Road. In 2021, enhancements from Brixton Road to Balmoral Road gave the area a fresh look with new pavements, landscaping, sustainable drainage, and better cycle facilities.

Small public spaces were also created at Hatfield Road, Victoria Road, and Bruce Grove, making the area more welcoming. More recent work towards Bushey Mill Lane focused on improving pavements, adding green spaces, and modernising street furniture to support pedestrians and cyclists.

Over the years, the council has also received funding to reduce fly-tipping and gum litter, further demonstrating its commitment to keeping the town clean and well-maintained.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “St Albans Road is a bustling and really important part of our town, used by thousands every day. The ongoing improvements to this road are a key commitment in my manifesto, ensuring local businesses thrive and making our streets more welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. I am pleased we are making these improvements and looking forward to seeing everyone enjoying the revitalised space soon.”

Councillor Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Sustainability, said: “St Albans Road has so much untapped potential. The success of past improvements shows how these projects can transform our local high streets. This investment will further enhance the area for residents, shoppers, and businesses.”

The works which will be complete by the end of June, are part of the council’s phased improvement plan for various locations including parades enhancements, aiming to revitalise local business hubs and enhance public spaces across the town.
