Damp and mould
Damp can cause mould on walls and furniture and can rot woodwork in properties. Housing that is damp and cold can encourage the growth of mould and mites that can be harmful to health. There are three main types of dampness:
- Condensation
- Penetrating damp
- Rising damp
Most cases of dampness reported to the council are linked to condensation. This occurs when there is too much moisture in the air and it condensates out on cold surfaces. Just like what happens to a bathroom mirror when having a shower.
You can deal with condensation problems by increasing the ventilation and the heating in the property. Additionally, you can reduce the problem by keeping doors to moisture producing rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms shut and ventilating these rooms by opening a window or using an extractor fan. The Government has asked that all local authorities set out a plan on how they will prioritise addressing the issues of damp and mould for private rented properties in their areas. You can view Watford Borough Council's action plan online. Information on damp and mould has also been provided by GOV.UK.
