Gaming machine renewals
Only one type of gaming machine permit covered on this page will ever expire, and that is a club gaming machine permit. However, even this will never expire if the application was made under the 'fast track' procedure where the club also holds a club premises certificate under the Licensing Act 2003.
Although alcohol licensed premises gaming machine permits and notices do not have an expiry date, they will lapse if the premises ceases to hold an alcohol licence, or if the alcohol licence changes hands. If the alcohol licence is transferred to new owners, it is possible to transfer a gaming machine permit to the new owners, but you cannot transfer a club gaming machine permit or a permission for up to two machines. It is also possible to surrender these permits by giving written notice to the licensing authority. A club gaming machine permit or alcohol licensed gaming machine permit may also be revoked if the annul permit fee is not paid.
If there is no permit in place, or there has been a change in ownership of a club premises or premises that only has permission for up to two machines, a new application will be required
To renew a club gaming machine permit, an application to renew the permit must be submitted during a period starting 3 months before the licence expires and ending 6 weeks before it expires. Provided that the application was submitted in the correct application period, the permit will continue to be in force while the renewal application is pending, including any appeals against a decision not to renew.
The procedure for renewal is the same as for a new application, and uses the same application form (PDF 106 kB). Applications must be copied to the Gambling Commission and the Police as responsible authorities (PDF 234 kB). A completed application form and the fee are submitted to the licensing authority.
The renewal fee is £200.

Permit holders must still notify the council if they change the name of the premises, the name or address of the permit holder, or if they need a replacement permit.
You can appeal against a decision to refuse a permit, cancel a permit, or to grant a permit for fewer machines than requested, to the magistrates’ court within 21 days of the decision.
